Gov. Mike Parson announced this week he has appointed Mary Sheid of West Plains to the State Board of Education.
Sheid is the owner/CEO of Physical Therapy Specialists Clinic in West Plains and has served in that capacity since starting the clinic in 1990. Her previous career experience was as director of physical therapy at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.
The new appointee holds a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a second bachelor’s degree from Drury College, now Drury University, in Springfield.
Sheid has served in an array of capacities for professional and community organizations, including on the Missouri State University Board of Governors, the Missouri Physical Therapy Association Board of Directors, the Southern Ozarks Alliance of Rural Development and the State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. She is the recipient of a number of awards including the McKenzie Institute International “Bronze Lady” Excellence Award in 2015.
The seven-member State Board of Education oversees policy updates for the Department of Elementary, the appointment of the commissioner of education and applications of academic and professional standards for public schools in Missouri. It also operates the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis and Missouri Schools for the Severely Disabled, as well as administers vocational rehabilitation and sheltered workshop programs.
